TOP TEN PIECES OF CAREER ADVICE - National Careers Week 2016

1. Study and work in whatever seemingly unrelated areas you are interested in, even if it's just a hobby. That way, when your dream job/business comes up, you'll be perfectly and uniquely qualified for it.                                    - Sarah Jansen, writer and editor

2. Important, exciting careers aren't linear or clearly defined.
                                                                                - Anonymous

3. Don't be better, be different. You might not have the exact experience listed on the job description, but if you can show how your unique skills would better suit the company, you have a better shot than someone who is a more technical match.
                                                                              - John Fawkes, Blogger and Career Coach

4. You can learn a lot hanging out by the printer.
                                                                              - Anonymous

5. You don't get ahead by doing your job well - you get ahead by making new things happen that weren't a part of your job description.
                                                                             - Victor Wong, CEO of PaperG

6. Attitude > Aptitude.                                        - Anonymous

7. Your main goal at work should be to learn and contribute. Success and promotion will follow from there.                                            - Laura Cooke

8. Talk openly about your failures. People will respect and trust you if they see that you're taking risks and aren't ashamed to learn from them.
                                                                              - Mira Zaslove

9. The best job for you won't be ready at the exact time you are 'ready'. You have to be open to and searching for opportunity all the time.
                                                                              - John Fawkes, Blogger and Career Coach

10. Ultimately, your career is largely a concept that exists in your mind. What you really have is a series of jobs, strung together, that form a story you are in charge of writing.
                                                                              - Blaine Lee Pardoe

SATRO'S STEMX EVENT PROGRAMME - SUMMER TERM 2015

Over the next four weeks, SATRO will be delivering 15 events in various local schools, to over 1,200 students. By delivering these events, we aim to provide young people with a glimpse into the working world at every stage in their education. Our programmes reach young people from their early school years, to their final years in education. Over the next four weeks we will be delivering exciting hands-on science lessons, practical lessons in building and construction, company challenges, business games, careers events and much more. We do this to enable young people to raise their aspirations, identify their skills and passions and reach their potential.

SATRO is thrilled that one of our Mega-Structures events is being supported by ExxonMobil. We will also be receiving support from many other companies, such as New Malden Rotary, Willmott Dixon, P&G, The Royal Navy, Pirbright Institute and Minted Box - to name just a few, who have offered their time to come and volunteer at our events. The value of volunteers facilitating our events is huge. Individuals offer young people exciting access to the world of work in a wide variety of different situations. Without the support of local companies we simply would not be able to deliver our events.

If you or your company are interested in supporting us, please visit our website www.satro.org.uk or email contactus@satro.org.uk

SATRO #STEMXAwards : Now Open For Applications!

Nominees and winners of 2014 Apprenticeship Awards
with the 2014 High Sheriff Peter Lee
SATRO’s STEMX Awards are set to put Surrey’s talented young people centre stage.  Showcasing excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the awards will celebrate the excellent practice and opportunity which exist in the area and demonstrate what companies and young people are doing to reduce the skills shortages.

There is a fantastic heritage of innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Surrey and the South East. A wealth of large and small to medium enterprises make the region an innovation powerhouse contributing to economic growth and development. Finding and nurturing the skills needed to fuel this growth can be a challenge, especially in STEM subjects. SATRO and the STEMX Awards are playing their part to help meet this challenge.

There are six Awards and applications are invited from businesses and individuals :

STEM Apprentice:
     - Individual achievement
     - Contribution to business
     - Progression

- Best STEM School leaver training programme

- Award for Business for working with schools to support the development of STEM skills

- Best contribution to business from students undertaking a STEM work placement

SATRO’s STEMX Awards build on the success of its Apprenticeship and Scholars Awards. Working with Surrey Chambers of Commerce and EH Enterprises, this year’s initiative will be even bigger and better.  With three new categories and a amazing array of talent on show, the awards will be an inspiration to young people and employers alike.

SATRO Chief Executive, Dr Beccy Bowden said “SATRO’s STEMX Awards seek to show case the wealth of STEM opportunities in our area through the Awards which we hope will encourage more young people to study STEM subjects and make the most of the many opportunities that exist ”

The Awards Ceremony will take place on 29th September at the prestigious Living Planet Centre in Woking and the evening promises to be a fantastic celebration of science, engineering and innovation with opportunities to view examples of young people’s work in industry and listen to an inspirational speaker.

Details on each of the Award can be found on the SATRO website : http://www.satro.org.uk/#!stemx-awards/c1mli

THE ASHCOMBE SCHOOL BUSINESS GAMES

Today and tomorrow, a lovely band of volunteers from Pfizer will be attending The Ashcombe School to help deliver another two SATRO Business Games. The volunteers will be working with our Deliverer to help support the Students in running their own stationery company. Throughout the day, they will be faced with many challenges including a business presentation towards the end of the workshop. We have delivered numerous events to The Ashcombe School this year including Careers Speed Dating Workshops and Inspirational Speakers. We have recently received this lovely testimonial from Chris Panting of The Ashcombe School...

"The Ashcombe have worked closely with SATRO for a number of years but over the past 12 months we have increased the number of events we have staged.  The support SATRO give is exceptional allowing us to offer new experiences to the students.  The recent Careers Speed Dating events have been some of the most successful extra-curricular activities we have done, with students and volunteers praising the impact of the session.  Students met several professionals from a variety of occupations and this interaction has helped to widen the horizons of a number of students and demonstrated that career paths are very varied.  The organisation of Margaret Royle was particularly impressive. SATRO continue to be invaluable supporters of the school and I cannot praise their contributions highly enough."

STUDENTS GAIN INSIGHT @ GLEBELANDS

On 8th July, 55 Year 10 students from Glebelands school gained an invaluable insight into the world of work when they took part in the SATRO Business Game. Teams of students became stationery companies for the day manufacturing booklets which they had to sell to a discerning panel of buyers. The game stretched their minds and abilities in a way they never thought possible. They had a myriad of business decisions to make as the game unfolded and were aided in their tasks by a number of business volunteers whose job it was to guide, support and encourage their teams as they got to grips with all the challenges inherent in running a business.

The stress levels were high as companies competed with each other to see who could make the most profit. Many valuable life skills were learnt.

SUCCESS @ SOUTHFIELD PARK PRIMARY

On Wednesday 3rd July, SATRO headed to Southfield Park Primary School for the last Junior Business Game of this academic year. 60 pupils were put through their paces during a hugely exciting day running a stationery company.

As the pupils' fledgling companies emerged, they produced prototypes and competed for stationery orders from the panel of buyers.  Bank accounts were opened and accountants wrestled with the difficulties of cash flow, whilst sales managers were intent on winning orders and marketing managers were busy promoting their businesses.  The Game threw the students some real challenges along the way, including paper shortages and one off, time limited, opportunities to make more money for their companies!

Later in the day, in a bid to win the best presentation award, the students prepared short presentations, outlining what they had learnt.  Competition is always tough and the judges had a challenging job selecting the winner.
